Acne is a skin disease that affects the skin’s oil
glands. Excess production of oil (sebum)
combined with clogged pores (usually hair, sebum, and skin cells that have
clumped together) is what allows pimples to grow. Acne can affect just about anyone at any
age. It is most common in teenagers and
young adults, but can still affect people in their forties and fifties.
Acne has many causes or contributing factors. Hormonal changes in teenagers and during
pregnancy, as well as use of birth control pills can cause oil glands to plug
more often. Pollution, high humidity,
tight clothing or clothing that prevents or restricts the body’s ability to perspire
and certain cosmetics can aggravate acne as can squeezing/picking pimples and
scrubbing the skin to hard.
What can you do to treat acne?
First and foremost gently clean your skin. Avoid touching your skin as much as possible
and don’t pick pimples as scars or dark spots can form. Stay out of the sun or at least use sun
screen. Many acne medicines put you at
risk of burning very easily in the sun and excessive sun exposure can lead to wrinkles
and raises your risk of skin cancer.
